around the area of Morelia and Michoacán is simple. The
locals are friendly and more than willing to help you plan out
day trips. Buses are available for low prices and taxis are also
available to take you outside of the city. Below
are suggestions of great adventures you can take from Casa Rosa.
Day
Trips
Pátzcuaro
Located
just 43 miles south of Morelia, the most picturesque city of Michoacán
is Pátzcuaro, a place dating from Pre-hispanic time where
there are buildings and vestiges from the 16th to the 19th century.

Tzintzuntzan
This
village with the singing name that means “where the butterflies
are” was once the capital of the great Purepecha empire and
the site of the first cathedral, though that was later moved to
Patzcuaro.
It
specializes in pottery with a creamy white glaze decorated with
simple line drawings in black. The drawings, often crudely done
but always charming, reflect the major local industry and show fish,
boats or fishermen wielding the graceful butterfly nets that have
become the trademark of Lake Patzcuaro.
Santuario
de Mariposas el Rosario
This
is a monarch sanctuary where over 100 million butterflies migrate
from the US and Canada. The sanctuary is located 115 km (71 MI)
east of Morelia. You can make tour arrangements through several
agencies, some hotels, or ask Fernando & Wilber to be your hosts.

Capula
A small town famous for its clay handcrafts, Capula’s artisans
are ceramicists. The subject of the ceramics is often fish but the
execution is far more sophisticated. Against a warm brown background,
usually with a scrolled border of bright blue or green, very lifelike
fish swim vigourously. The whole central motif is then stippled
with thousands of tiny dots in a creamy beige much like a pointillist
painting.
The
Nilaya Center
A relaxing and spiritual 'center of transformation' located
in the foothills about an hour from Morelia, The Nilaya Center offers
day or weekend retreats complete with massages, spiritual
counseling, workshops and nutrition and detoxification treatments.

Weekend
Trips
Mexico
City
Morelia
is located 195 miles northwest of Mexico City and 228 miles southeast
of Guadalajara.
Built
in the 16th century by the Spanish on the ruins of Tenochtitlan,
the old Aztec capital, Mexico City is now one of the world's largest
and most densely populated cities. It has five Aztec temples, the
ruins of which have been identified, a cathedral (the largest on
the continent) and some fine 19th- and 20th-century public buildings
such as the Palacio de las Bellas Artes.
Xochimilco
This ancient Aztec site lies 28 km south of Mexico City. With its
network of canals and artificial islands, it testifies to the efforts
of the Aztec people to build a habitat in the midst of an unfavourable
environment. Its characteristic urban and rural structures, built
since the 16th century and during the colonial period; have been
preserved in an exceptional manner.
Spend
the day on the canals with boat rides which are absolutely riotous
complete with beer, live music, food, and shopping.

Acapulco
A
seaport located in the southern state of Guerrero on the pacific
coast, this beautiful resort is approximately 260 miles (420 km)
from Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The city of Acapulco boasts
an enchanting blue bay. The Sierra Madre Del Sur Mountains tower
over three sides of Acapulco Bay.
