Entertainment
and Festivals
Many
fine cultural exhibitions are continually going on in Morelia, including
regional dances, choir and organ recitals, folkloric
dances, and many other events. For
more lively entertainment with music that continues throughout the
night, there are a few discos in town.
All
year round something exciting is happening, including several great
ferias (fairs). The Fair of Morelia in May features a regular
old-fashioned state fair with handmade items, prize animals, and
produce displays; of course there's a bullfight.
The
first two weeks in May the International Organ Festival attracts
musicians from all over the world.
Morelia's
"birthday" is May 18. For two weeks in July and August, musicians
put on performances for the International Music Festival.
Mexican
Independence Day on September 15-16
features parades, dances, music, and speeches.
On
September 30
the Birthday of Don José María Morelos celebrates
the local Independence hero the city was named for.
Día de Los Muertos ("Day of the Dead") is October
31-November
2.
Día
de la Virgen de Guadalupe on December 12
is the day to remember the patron saint of Mexico.
Check
at the tourism office where you can pick up a calendar
of events printed each month.
Sports
If
you're into golf, check out the Club Campestre, a tricky
nine-hole course where nonmembers are welcome.
Balneario
Cointzio is a lovely spa about 25 kilometers west of town. There
are lots of hills for trekking and a zoo for viewing animals.
Perhaps
this isn't considered a "sport" per se, but the Butterfly Sanctuary
will include a trek into the countryside. One hundred million monarch
butterflies make a yearly migration that takes them 5,000-8,000
kilometers from Canada and the central and northern U.S. to the
transvolcanic belt in Mexico. This ecosystem is located at an altitude
of 2,800-3,300 meters. The climate is ideally suited for the overwintering
butterflies. The entire area is filled with butterflies.
Shopping
Any
place you look in the historic center of Morelia has fine or funky
shops. Antique collectors will delight in finding precious
minutia from the past and ancient religious articles that still
circulate. Other shops specialize in the local crafts. Michoacán
ranks high as an all-round good state to do major shopping. The
variety of arts and crafts is huge, from copper everything
to woolen garments and beautiful, brilliantly colored, modern-day
woven table linens. There's intricately wrought silver filigree,
woven straw, embroidery, and lovely lacquerware
with inlaid gold that rivals that of the Orient. In many of the
communities you can watch the art as it's created. Beautifully handpainted
and carved furniture also comes from Morelia.
